Hydrophilic polymers are widely used as matrices in the formulation of pharmaceutical dosage forms with sustained API release; however, dose-dumping effects with such preparations can cause severe complications.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the overdosage risk by using a swellable and erodible prolonged release tablet matrix based on a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) possessing optimized particle properties with respect to its (direct) compressibility and reliable sustained dissolution behavior.
