Indian regulator CDSCO is developing a new Drug and Cosmetics Act that is more in keeping with the modern pharmaceutical industry.

The agency announced it is working on a revision of India’s 71 year old guidance document this month.

It expalined that the idea is to incorporate advances in testing technology and reflect innovations in formulation development.

Specifics of the revision have not been provided, and the Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation (CDSCO) said it wanted input from the pharmaceutical industry and other stakeholders.

Interested parties have until June 20 to contribute.

Process

Work on the revision of the 1945 Drugs and Cosmetics Rules has been ongoing for the past few years.

This work accelerated in December 2014 when the Indian Government set up a committee to revisit the legislation.

At the time the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said the aim was to “make these rules contemporary while keeping in view the requirements of quality, safety and efficacy of medical products.”
