The first radio frequency identification (RFID) tag that can resist
gamma irradiation has been developed to track pharmaceutical
products early on and throughout the supply chain.

AdvantaPure, a division of NewAge Industries, focuses on ultra-clean products for the pharmaceutical, food beverage, biomedical and cosmetic industries.

AdvantaPure's GammaTag is resistant to gamma-radiation and gives manufacturers the opportunity to tag products early on at the supply chain and keep tracking them through the sterilisation process, where in the past RFID chip have been destroyed. The chip will also be useful in manufacturing of liquid pharmaceuticals that requires gamma irradiation.

The global demand for new developments within smart technologies is growing to a projected $4.8bn (€3.8bn) in 2011 and will potentially reach $14.1bn in 2013, according to NanoMarkets.

"The additional cost for a GammaTag is around 20 to 25 per cent. But it is a relatively low cost when considering that full traceability is possible and that login security is exceptionally high. You will be able to track down who has done which changes, " says Thomas Mörck, Saniflex AB, AdvantaPure distributors.

Manufacturers will be able to provide necessary info on the chip, such as serial number, where and when and by whom the product was made. In addition, the GammaTag is readable, writable and resistant to clean-in-place sterilization processes.

"The GammaTag can be placed in a pocket on the outside of a bag but there are many different ways of attachment. We have a complete system, including the chip and Process Equipment Tracking (PET), for the process of tracking disposables through manufacturers to sterilization and to pharmaceutical companies," says Richard Baker, CEO of NewAge Industries to in-pharmatechnologist.com.

GammaTag is able to withstand gamma radiation up to 45 kilograys.

RFID tags will ease the manufacturing process and provide product authentication to beat drug counterfeiters.
