Metrohm unveils high-throughput titration system

Metrohm has developed a robotic analyser that could improve the
safety and reduce the cost of non-aqueous titration experiments.

The MATi-3 robotic analyser is targeted at companies in the pharmaceutical sector, according to the company, as the majority of titrations carried out in the drug industry take place in non-aqueous media.

The solvents used in non-aqueous titrations are not only expensive but also frequently represent a health hazard, according to Metrohm. These conditions, combined with the generally high value of the analysed ingredients, put high demands on sample preparation.

The system supplied by Metrohm comprises an 836 Titrando and the 815 Robotic USB Sample Processor XL, and makes use of its Solvotrode, an electrode specifically designed for non-aqueous titrations that assures the reliable indication of the equivalence points.

Operation involves simply weighing the sample into a beaker and placing it on the rack - then pressing a button to get things going.

The sample rack of the 815 Robotic USB Sample Processor XL accommodates 59 disposal beakers in three rows: each beaker for a volume up to 120mL. An 800 Dosino unit, connected to the sample processor, doses the organic solvent to dissolve the sample, while a built-in pump carries out rinsing and aspiration of sample and organic solvent after the titration.
