Health care major Abbott Laboratories says has received a US Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) letter giving its diagnostic
manufacturing operations, in Lake County, Illinois a near clean
bill of health.

In 2000, Abbott failed an inspection at the plant and had to remove a number of its diagnostic products from the market as a result.

The agency's decision follows an inspection of the firm's diagnostic manufacturing operations, which determined that there are follow-up actions, which the company needs to take, but that Abbott can remedy these itself.

Now that the Lake County operations have been found in substantial conformity, Abbott says it can start the process to reintroduce products that were removed from the market in 2000. The company adds that it can also begin the process of introducing new products, which will resume on a rolling basis throughout the next 12 months.
