The European Commission has published a draft monograph in the European Pharmacopoeia for BASF's recently-introduced sustained-release coating polymer Kollicoat SR 30 D.

This polyvinylacetate dispersion, stabilised with povidone and sodium laurylsulfate, has a strong release-retarding activity, a reliable, pH-independent adjustment of release rate, easy handling and excellent film-forming properties and is used as binder for granulation processes in the production of sustained-release matrix tablets.

Meantime, a modified draft monograph has been published for a spray dry coating of BASF's established enteric coating Kollicoat MAE 30 DP that adds a so-called 'type B' version of the methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer. The type B exactly characterises BASF's already partly neutralised material, said the firm. Kollicoat MAE 30 DP is used for enteric coatings, and is more cost effective and reliably generate higher resistance to gastric fluid than cellulose derivatives, according to BASF.
