UK chemicals and metals firm Johnson Matthey has opened a precious metal process catalyst manufacturing plant in India to cater to the growing demand from the local pharmaceutical industry and provide a springboard into other Asian markets.
The plant, at Taloja in the western state of Maharashtra, was set up with an investment of about 250 million rupees (€1.9m), and is Johnson Matthey's tenth process catalyst manufacturing plant.
Johnson Matthey has been making autocatalysts in India since 1998 and acquired ICI India's catalyst business in 2002 to get a foothold in the base metal catalyst field in the country.
The company told local newspaper The Hindu that the company is aiming for a 10 to 15 per cent growth annually in the catalyst sector of the pharma industry.
"This new facility complements our existing presence and reflects our commitment to this rapidly growing economy," said Neil Carson, executive director of Johnson Matthey. For example, the company has been active in the autocatalysts sector in India since setting up a manufacturing plant in 1998.
