Germany's Schreiner MediPharm has introduced a new security label, intended specifically for use with syringes filled with heat-sensitive pharmaceuticals.
The new security label can be used to protect patients from health risks resulting from improper medication, counterfeit drugs or hypodermics contaminated by previous usage, according to the company.
"Counterfeiting and tampering of pharmaceuticals, as well as any poor labeling, can be fatal for the patient, and lead to enormous economical damage for the manufacturers - whether due to lost of revenue, incalculable warranty demands or irreparable loss of image," according to Schreiner Medipharm.
The new label features inserted spacers to compensate for the different diameters of syringe and cap, with parts of the label overlapping on the top of the cap. This means that any attempt to remove the label and/or the cap will visibly destroy the seal, thus clearly indicating a tampering attempt.
"Current tampering protection for syringes presents problems when labelling certain heat-sensitive drugs," according to Schreiner Medipharm. But it said the new security labels are suitable for processing on any conventional labelling equipment.
