Canadian company Automation Tooling Systems has acquired rights to a robotic system used in the semiconductor industry and says it intends to develop new applications in healthcare, biomedicine and pharmaceuticals.

In return for taking a three per cent equity stake in Innovative Robotics Systems and a licensing fee, ATS has been granted a license to make IRS ' IR800 system - designed for use in the ultraclean environments used in semiconductor manufacture - and also modify it to integrate with ATS' own technologies.

The healthcare industries "are emerging markets for industrial automation which require specialty robots capable of operating in sterile and other barriered environments", said the company.

Total cash consideration to be paid by ATS over the next year for the license and equity stake will be $1 million (€850,000), including $400,000 for prepaid royalties against future ATS sales of IR800 robots.
