Chinese drug regulators have ordered Sichuan-based drugmaker Vital Pharmaceutical Holdings to withdraw its hemorrhoid medicine Zhixue on concerns that it could cause liver damage.

The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) took the action after it received reports that 21 one users of the Zhiuxe tablets had developed liver problems and a further 14 had experienced adverse reactions.

The SFDA said that: “An obvious connection can be found between the haemorrhoid medicine and the liver damage after case analysis, but the cause of the adverse reactions remains unknown.”
