US drugmaker Merck & Co is to close a New Jersey warehouse owned by recent acquisition Schering-Plough, cutting 80 jobs.

The facility, in Hunterdon County, stores and packages a range of products, including the NuvaRing female contraceptive device.

According to reports in the local media operations will cease at the end of January as part of Merck’s ongoing consolidation programme that will see the firm reduce its workforce by around 16,000 employees.

The LeighValleyLive website quoted Merck as saying that: “Increasing pressures on the pharmaceutical industry and Schering-Plough, particularly in the United States, and the need to reduce costs and increase efficiencies through a more streamlined work force.”
