Biotechnology group Genzyme will boost biomanufacturing capacity at its plant in Geel, Belgium in a move that is “fundamentally important to future growth” according to site VP Sandra Poole.
The US firm has invested €46m (€62.5m) to install approximately 4,000 litres of additional bioreactor capacity at the facility in an expansion that will create around 80 new manufacturing jobs.
Poole explained that the investment “is a reflection of our commitment to Europe and is enabling us to bring our innovative therapies to a growing number of patients around the world.”
She added that the new bioreactors, which bring the total available capacity to 14,000 litres when completed in 2011, will be used for the production of therapeutic proteins to treat lysosomal storage disorders.
