Water treatment system cuts costs and risks

By George Reynolds, 31-May-2007

A new water treatment system can help food processors reduce costs and meet water safety regulations, its manufacturer claims.

Koch Membrane Systems claims its MegaMagnum water treatment system uses 18-inch membrane elements that significantly reduce the cost, footprint and installation time of municipal and industrial water treatment systems.

During food manufacturing, water is often a key ingredient in products and is essential to processing. Ensuring water inputs are pure is prerequisite in plants, but the purity of outflows is increasingly important for processors as tougher contamination and environmental laws and regulations come into force.

The MegaMagnum system requires about half of the floor space of a rack with 8-inch membrane elements. An 18-by-61 inch MegaMagnum spiral element contains 2,800 square feet of membrane surface area, compared to 400 square feet in commonly deployed 8-by-40 inch competing products.

The same water quantity and quality at the fouling rate of standard eight inch elements operating at similar fluxes and pressures is achieved by the MegaMagnum, which uses seven times fewer elements, claims the manufacturer.

Systems are pre-engineered, enabling fast installation and start up, the company claims. Four configurations are available as standard with nominal flow capacities ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 million gallons a day.

As standard, systems include flowmeters, pressure transmitters, a conductivity meter, a variable frequency drive and a human machine interface with touch screen, data trending and Ethernet access. Optional equipment includes systems for antiscalant dosing, acid dosing, chlorine monitoring and clean-in-place.

For shipment and installation purposes, systems are mounted upon one or two skids, depending on the model. A special system has been developed by Koch which enables elements of the MegaMagnum to be loaded and unloaded, the company claims.

US-based Koch Membrane Systems is a global manufacturer of separation and filtration products for industry, including the food, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors.
