An Indian effluent treatment plant has been hit by a fine of Rs 23.3m ($470,000) for contaminating the water in the Andhra Pradesh region, according to local media reports.

The fine was imposed by the Andhra Pollution Control Board after the Patancheru Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) was cited in a research paper as failing to properly treat pharmaceutical wastewater.

This resulted in the detection of high levels of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) in the local river. In addition to the fine the CETP can no longer accept industrial wastewater with total dissolvent solid greater than 5,000 mg per litre.
