Chilean conglomerate Cristalerias has announced plans to invest $210 million (€173m) over the next 10 years to double its glass container output to 600,000 tonnes a year, the company said in a statement.

Cristalerias makes glassware for the pharmaceutical, food and beverage and other industries, and said it was responding to increased demand for its products, both domestically and internationally.

The first stage will be the building of a new $110 million plant with four production lines and an oven with a capacity of 360 tonnes a day. It will start operating in 2006, increasing Cristalerias' glass container production by 35 per cent.

Thereafter, the company plans to add seven more production lines and two more ovens in the new plant.
