Nigerian authorities have arrested 12 people accused of substituting glycerine in My Pikin Baby Teething Mixture for diethylene glycol, a chemical normally found in antifreeze, which has been linked to the deaths of 84 children.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), said that authorities were seeking the maximum penalty of 15 years in jail for those accused.
Diethylene glycol has been linked to many poisoning cases worldwide. In 2006 in Panama 116 people are though to have died after taking contaminated cough syrup and antihistamine tablets.
