Agilent Technologies has introduced a TOF (time of flight) mass spectrometer to complement its existing quadrupole and ion trap systems. The Agilent LC/MSD TOF product is designed to provide high mass accuracy (3 parts per million) while reducing the complexity of instrument use, according to the firm, which made the announcement at the ongoing Annual Conference of Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics in Montreal, Canada.
Other features of Agilent's TOF system include low-femtomole sensitivity and 10,000 resolving power for definitive molecular weight and elemental composition information. "This provides the extra confidence required for publication or patent application", said the company in a statement.
Achieving the highest level of mass accuracy in TOF mass spectrometry requires correction based on comparison to reference mass standards, notes Agilent. For most TOF instruments, the introduction of a mass standard is a difficult process and its concentration must be within the same range as that of the sample. Agilent says that its system, however, features an acquisition system that provides three orders of magnitude dynamic range, thereby eliminating the need to match internal reference mass and sample concentrations.
The LC/MSD TOF is expected to be available for order on 1 August, with prices starting at approximately $220,000 (€188,000) for the mass spectrometer, data system and operating software.
