Cost savings and more consistency in the quality of pills could be realised if near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) is used to predict dissolution rates of matrix tablets in the body, according to researchers.

By using NIR a team at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, US were able to accurately predict the dissolution rate of a matrix-type controlled release tablet. The research was published last month in the International Journal of Pharmaceutics .

Previous work by the team focused on using NIR on coated tablets which release slowly. The team then moved on to matrix formulations that use physical polymers to slow the release process.
