Diethyleneglycol (DEG) has reared its ugly head again, causing up to 25 deaths in Nigeria so far this year according to a November 28 article on the allAfrica.com website.

The report says that Nigeria’s national Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) linked the deaths to a painkilling powder used to alleviate teething discomfort in infants, has closed down the responsible manufacturing facility and pulled the product from pharmacy shelves.

The replacement of glycerol with cheaper but toxic DEG by drug fakers has been a perennial problem for the pharmaceutical industry. In recent years products contaminated with the poison have caused hundreds of deaths in Haiti, Panama and Bangladesh.
