Italy's Bonfiglioli Engineering has launched a leak testing machine for syringes, with the ability to check and remove syringes that are faulty before leaving the factory.

There are several leak testing machines on the market but until recently no machine was available for testing pre-filled syringes. To fill a gap, Bonfiglioli introduced the technology last year as an important tool to check integrity of packaging and to comply with quality control regulations.

Bonfiglioli's R&D team designed a machine that will automatically fill and seal a hundred pre-sterilised syringes, put together in a so-called nest. The machine tests every syringe and if a faulty item is found it is swiftly removed from the nest by a 'pick and place' system. Where the company claims the machine is efficient enough to process up to six nests per minute.

Bonfiglioli's manufactures the system according to customer requests and says that it is fully computerised, using a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) platform.

The company claims that the leak tester can prevent medicine recalls and expensive court cases, but above all maintain a company's good reputation.
