Italian brand protection company Solos has developed a covert form of product identification technology that can be applied across a broad range of paper and plastic packaging.

The anti-counterfeiting technology takes the form of a security thread that can be hidden in the packaging and easily read by a portable reader, according to a report from UK packaging consultancy Pira.

Bologna-based Solos (Sistemi Olografici per la Sicurezza) specialises in holographic anti-counterfeiting systems, but had said it will not reveal any additional details about the security thread until it has been granted a patent on the technology, which was only developed last month.

The €5 million turnover company said that it was already in discussions with companies across five separate industrial sectors with a view to commercialising the system. Solos already has links with the pharmaceutical industry, with its anti-counterfeiting technologies appearing on a number of medicines.

Pira reports that Solos has developed a prototype of the technology but is waiting for machinery to begin producing it on a commercial basis. The company expects machinery will be in place before the end of the year.
