The European Commission has approved Novartis’ €925m ($1.2bn) acquisition of Ebewe Spezial-Pharma’s generic injectables business.

The Commission said that: “the transaction would not raise competition concerns as significant marker shares and overlaps between the parties’ activities would only arise in a small number of markets where a sufficient number of credible competitors [exist],”

The deal, which was announced in May, will expand the portfolio of Novartis’ generics unit Sandoz, particularly its range of oncology drugs and cytotoxic chemotherapy agents.

Commenting at the time Novartis CEO Daniel Vasella said that: "Ebewe Pharma will further strengthen our pipeline with many planned near-term launches."

Ebewe’s neurological products business in not included in the deal.
