The WHO has upgraded the pandemic warning to “imminent” and is expected to begin distributing reference samples of the H1N1 swine flu viral strain that has spread around the world to vaccine manufacturers.

New US Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen (HHS) Sebelius said yesterday that: “A strain has been identified. Manufacturers are on the alert. Once the testing protocol is done and the dosage protocol is done, they are ready to begin production, should that be necessary.”

One vaccine maker, Baxter International, told Bloomberg late yesterday that it expects to receive a virus sample “in the next couple of days.” Others expected to be involved in vaccine production include GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Sanofi Aventis.
