Fine chemical company Univar has constructed a network of suppliers for paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen) to avoid shortages following the closure of the last plant making the ingredient in Europe.

Rhodia announced plans to shut down its paracetamol plant in Roussillon, France, a year ago, and should exit the market by the end of the year. Univar says it has “identified the best paracetamol suppliers,” from around the globe and can “guarantee the same high quality while fully complying with the European regulations.”

115,000 tonnes of paracetamol are consumed each year, 25 per cent of it in Europe. The global demand is growing at around 2 per cent a year, according to Univar.
