Swiss drugmaker Debiopharm has signed a contract with Labopharm for the application of the latter's nanodelivery system to one of its intravenous cancer drugs.

Labopharm's polymeric nano-delivery systems are composed of proprietary, low cost, block co-polymers developed specifically for effective delivery of water insoluble compounds and poorly bio-available compounds, including highly toxic compounds such as cancer drugs.

The company claims that the polymers are suitable for oral and parenteral administration, have a high loading capacity, and are biocompatible and biodegradable. They are designed to improve the efficacy of drugs whilst avoiding dose-limiting side effects associated with conventional formulations.

This is Labopharm's first agreement for the nanodelivery system, although the company has several collaborations in place for its Contramid delivery technology, which is designed to improve the delivery of drugs ranging from those that are very soluble to those that are poorly soluble.

"With the polymeric nano-delivery system technology we can now address the delivery challenges of water insoluble compounds, as well as, potentially, proteins and peptides," said James Howard-Tripp, Labopharm's president and chief executive.
