Colorcon has launched a drug layering substrate, composed of uniform, free flowing pellets, which it claims has applications in multiparticulate drug delivery.

The product, called SureSpheres, is made of sucrose and starch and is consistent in critical factors, including surface roughness, particle size and distribution, density, hardness and friability.

Having this consistency should ensure an accurate dose of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in the finished product. APIs will adhere to the spheres because of their uniform surface, according to Colorcon.

Furthermore, when combined with modified release coatings the spheres allow for precise drug release. Michael McDougal, director of Colorcon’s excipient portfolio, described SureSpheres as “a high quality, consistent starting substrate for…multiparticulate formulations".
