Pevion Biotech has successfully completed preclinical safety and efficacy studies of its RSV vaccine candidate, which uses a virosome-based delivery platform.

The vaccine is formulated by combining peptides, proteins or carbohydrates of interest with a lipid anchor. This enables attachment to the surface of virosomes.

Employing this methodology creates a vaccine with high tolerability and safety, according to Pevion, which are particularly important traits when immunising against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Having completed efficacy studies and proof-of-concept in the animal model, Pevion is aiming to begin clinical trials in 2011 or 2012.
