The Australian TGA is seeking benzylpenicillin manufacturers after CSL warned that its supplier, Sandoz, is unable to meet global demand.

CSL expects stocks of its 600mg Benpen (benzylpenicillin sodium) to be empty by the end of the week and other volumes to be used up within two months. Australia-based CSL said Sandoz is unable to meet global demand and the shortage is expected to continue until near the end of the year.

To maintain supply over the next few months the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is working to find and fast-track the import of alternative benzylpenicillin products.
