Process development has been completed and DSM has now begun cGMP production of the compound at its microbial fermentation plant in Capua, Italy. Material produced will be used in preclinical and Phase I trials.
Mike Dawson, chief scientific officer at Novacta, said: "We have chosen to work with DSM as it has an impressive track record for scaling up fermentation processes for antibacterial agents from actinomycetes."
The C difficile molecule being produced by DSM belongs to a new class of lantibiotic compounds.
