Wyeth is cutting back on its early stage R&D efforts to focus on oncology, inflammation, vaccines, metabolic diseases, musculoskeletal problems and neuroscience.

The move, which is part of the firm’s Project Impact restructuring strategy is in keeping with refocusing efforts made by rivals such as Pfizer, Eli Lilly and Bristol-Myers Squibb in recent months.

Wyeth spokesman Michael Lampe told Reuters that the plans were not a cost-reduction exercise and would affect neither its level of R&D spending or personnel.
