Belgian drug and chemicals giant Solvay has lost out on a contract to supply the Dutch government with an H1N1 vaccine after it said it could not meet the production deadline.

Solvay spokesman Erik De Leye told Reuters that: “The Dutch government has placed its order with other vaccine producers as Solvay cannot deliver pandemic vaccines in the timeline asked by the Dutch government.”

Dutch authorities are understood to have ordered a total of 34m vaccines from a number of the world top manufacturers for delivery before the end of the year.

Earlier this month Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Sanofi Aventis, CSL and Baxter all said they have begun developing H1N1 vaccines, with the general consensus being that the first batches will be ready this autumn.
