Sanofi Aventis plans to launch 15 new generic products in rural India, under its new Prayas marketing initiative being rolled out through its Hoechst brand.

According to a report in the Business Standard, Sanofi will target rural areas sourcing drugs from four, as yet unnamed, local contract manufacturers.

By 2010, Sanofi told the paper that it hopes to generate an additional RNI500m (€7.2m) a year from the Prayas campaign.

The French drug giant’s interest in generics is in keeping with a series of recent moves made by its Big Pharma peers Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Novartis ahead of patent expiry for leading blockbuster drug products.
