French drug major Sanofi Aventis, Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Germany’s Ratiopharm were raided by European Commission (EC) competition officials yesterday as part of an ongoing investigation.

The commission explained that it “has reason to believe that the provisions of the EC Treaty prohibiting restrictive business practices and/or the abuse of a dominant market position may have been infringed.”

The three firms confirmed that the raids had taken place, with Sanofi telling AFP that it would co-operate with the commission.

Anti-competitive practices within the pharmaceutical industry have been the subject of a EC scrutiny since January 2008 when a raids were carried out at a number of leading European drugmakers.
