Pfizer is considering the sale of its Pharmacia Diagnostics business, acquired alongside the rest of Pharmacia in a $60 billion deal that concluded in April. The move fits with Pfizer's stated strategy of divesting operations outside its core focus.

Hank McKinnell, Pfizer's chief executive, said: "The Pharmacia Diagnostics business is a successful and growing business, with an outstanding reputation and strong position in its industry. However, this business is not aligned with Pfizer's strategic focus on our three core businesses of human pharmaceuticals, consumer healthcare and animal health".

Headquartered in Uppsala, Sweden, Pharmacia Diagnostics had 2002 sales of approximately $220 million.
