Pfizer has announced plans to dramatically cut production capacities at Pharmacia's factory in Tsukuba, north of Tokyo, in order to improve profitability when the two firms merge their Japanese operations in August. Pfizer completed its acquisition of Pharmacia's operations elsewhere in April.
The Tsukuba factory currently produces and packages 33 drugs. Pfizer wants to reduce the number of products the factory handles and outsource a portion of the production, according to a report in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. Pfizer's manufacturing in Japan will continue to be based at its site in Aichi prefecture.
