The spread of swine flu has caused significant rises in the share prices of some vaccine makers, including Novavax, which rose 80 per cent, and BioCryst, which spiked by 76 per cent.

Both companies have flu vaccines in development and this has led to increased interest from investors. Novavax experienced a similar thing during a previous bird-flu scare, which took its share price over $10 but this fell considerably once the immediate concern had passed.

Other companies in the sector, such as Sanofi-Aventis, Baxter and Vical, have seen their share prices rise and Roche and GlaxoSmithKline are also likely benefit.
