According to a report in the Boston Globe the move, which cuts the workforce at AstraZeneca’s facility in Westborough, Massachusetts by 10 per cent, follows Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for a rival asthma drug made by generics firm Apotex.
Company spokeswoman Kate Klemas told the paper that: “We have to be cognizant of what will be happening in the market and plan according to that.”
AstraZeneca, which also produces the heartburn treatment Nexium at the facility, has not yet issued a statement on the move.
